Building Strategic Scorecards and Mature Business Intelligence

A strategic scorecard is an effective way for a company to organize and manage their long-term goals. The scorecard can help a business determine what means are needed to achieve these goals and what departments should assist in their completion. Analysis through mature business intelligence provides a streamlined approach so beneficial decisions can be made regarding company goals.

A clearly defined vision or mission needs to be established in the primary development of a scorecard. The company should evaluate their current standing and where they aim to be in the future. Once a vision has been established, planning can begin to determine what goes into achieving the outlined goals. Prioritization and definitions of specified targets should be obtained at this point. Clearly defined priorities help departments collect the data needed to set realistic expectations. Strengths and weaknesses can then be evaluated once all departmental research is collected. A pragmatic approach should be taken when making these assessments. At this point, foundation strategies can begin to take shape with the information collected.

Establishing a foundation prepares the way for a strategic plan to be prepared and written. Now that all the necessary data has been collected and detailed, it can be input into a chart format in a spreadsheet. This chart is the actual scorecard and should contain objectives for each target goal, implementation measures, the targeted and actual figure, and the current status of the goal.

Proper analysis of the scorecard through business intelligence can help a business eliminate unnecessary risks and support the execution of the outlined goals. Business intelligence is an array of methods used to provide support and suggestions to obtain optimal decision making. Data mining, resource planning, and forecasting are some of the methods used in providing the user with the best information possible to make a better business decision. In a mature system, future outcomes, models, and options can be accurately composed based on data collected.

Companies may not always have the experience or time necessary to create the most efficient strategies. An outside source can often improve the bottom line and offer more efficient forecasting to the company.
